Material: the manuscript is in a good state of conservation, but has suffered the loss of many folios (see Hunger 1961, 312); the numbering begins on f. 15.

Binding: not original.

Watermarks: Hunger (1961, 312) identifies four watermarks: a bow, similar to Briquet 790 (Pisa 1387); two circles, similar to Briquet 3172 (Padua 1374); a hoe, similar to Briquet 7482 (Castellane 1316); a fruit, similar to Briquet 7376 (Siena 1355–1356).

Scribes: a single scribe wrote the entire manuscript.    

Annotations: (f. 33r) ἐτελ<ε>ίωσα τὸ παρὸν βιβλίον τὸ πρῶτον διὰ χειρὸς ἐμοῦ Ἰωάννου τοῦ Ξανθηνοῦ καὶ ἐπλήρωσα τὸ ὃ τέλος ἐστίν, ‘I have the present book, the first by my hand, Ioannes XanthenusIoannes Xanthenus (PLP 20797), and I have completed what is the end’. Strangely, this does not seem to be the hand that wrote the previous pages; (f. 288v) Auger. de Busbecke comparavit Costantinopol., ‘Ogier de Busbecq bought [it] in Constantinople’.

1 (ff. 15r–33r) <Manuel Moschopulus, De schedis>. The title, if there was one, is lost. Incipit: λῃστής λῃστεύω λῃστεία. Explicit: τὸ τρίτον ᾠκτίσατο. It lacks a modern edition: see τοῦ σοφωτάτου καὶ λογιωτάτου Μανουήλου τοῦ Μοσχοπούλου Περὶ σχεδῶν / Manuelis Moschopuli de ratione examinandae orationis libellus. Paris 1514.

f. 33v: blank.

2 (ff. 34r–44r) An orthographic lexicon. Title: ἀρχὴ τοῦ λεξικοῦ. Incipit: τίνα ἀπὸ τοῦ αι ἀρχόμενα ἔχοντα. Explicit: εἰς τὸν εὔξεινον πόντον καὶ ἕτερα. On this lexicon see Schneider (1999).

3 (ff. 44v–50v) A treatise on active verbs. Title: σημείωσα· περὶ ῥημάτων δραστηρίων. Incipit: εἰσί τινα ῥήματα δραστήρια. Explicit: ἡ μετοχὴ ὁ κεχηνώς. Not edited. (f. 48v is blank).

4 (ff. 51r–74r) Matthaeus Blastares, De gratia. Title: περὶ τῆς θείας χάριτος ἢ περὶ φωτός· Ματθαίου. Incipit: εὐσύνοπτον βούλομαι καὶ καθόσον οἷόν τε σαφῆ λόγον. Explicit: τῶν οἰκείων νόμων γενόμενος. Not edited.

f. 74v: a short text (τῶν Τρωικῶν ὕστερον <γε>γένηται Ὅμηρος), followed by Hom. Il. 1.1.

5 (f. 75r–v) Some short notes on the chronology of Homer, on measures, and several schedae.

7 (ff. 180r–264r) Manuel Moschopulus, Vocum Atticarum collectio. Title: ὀνομάτων Ἀττικῶν συλλογὴ ἐκλεγεῖσα ἀπὸ τῆς Τεχνολογίας τῶν Εἰκόνων τοῦ Φιλοστράτου, ἣν ἐξέδοτο ὁ σοφώτατος κύριος Μανουὴλ ὁ Μοσχόπουλος, καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν βιβλίων τῶν ποιητῶν. 11 (ff. 282r–v) A mutilated treatise on meters. Title: σημείωσα περὶ μέτρου. Incipit: ἰστέον ὅτι ὁ τῶν ποδῶν οἱ μέν εἰσι δισύλλαβοι. Explicit: ὁ πολὺς χρόνος ἐπειδὴ. Not edited.

12 (ff. 283r–288v) A text on grammar, mutilated at the beginning and at the end. The title is lost, if there was one. Incipit: ὑπό σου τὸ δὲ φεύγω καὶ φοβοῦμαι καὶ μὴ ὄντα δραστήρια. Explicit: ὁ δὲ Πορφύριος ἵνα μὴ καταδεέστεραι τῶν ποδῶν. Not edited.

The watermarks suggest that the manuscript dates from the second half of the 14th century, or more precisely to the third quarter. The copyist has not been identified. The manuscript was owned for a time in the 15th century (see PLP 20797) by Ioannes XanthenusIoannes Xanthenus, who wrote a note on f. 33r claiming – allegedly lying – that this was the first manuscript penned by his hand. Ogier Ghiselin de BusbecqOgier Ghiselin (1522–1592) acquired this book in Constantinople, perhaps during his stay in the Ottoman empire between the years 1554 and 1562.
