Material: paper.

Binding: not original, probably from the 16th century, but the trimming decorations are original and were made in Crete in the 15th century (see Martinelli Tempesta, Speranzi 2018, 192).

Watermarks: I found only one at ff. 236/7 anvil, similar to Briquet 5955 (1418–1453).

Scribes: A: ff. 1r–17v; B: 19r–216v; C: 217r–236v.

Annotations: at f. 19v there is an ownership note by Francesco FilelfoFrancesco Filelfo: ἡ βίβλος αὕτη Φραγκίσκου τοῦ Φιλέλφου ἐστὶ καὶ τῶν αὐτοῦ φίλων.

1 (1v–12r) Isaac Argyrus, Opera astronomica. Title: Ἰσαὰκ μοναχοῦ τοῦ Ἀργυροῦ Οἰναιώτῃ τῷ κυρῷ Ἀνδρονίκῳ μεθόδους αἰτήσαντι λογικὰς ἐκθέσθαι ἡλιακῶν καὶ σεληνιακῶν κύκλων καὶ τῶν τούτοις ἑπομένων. Incipit: ἐπειδὴ τοὺς ἄλλους τῶν νῦν σοφῶν. Explicit: τὸν λιβόνοτον καὶ τὸν εὐρόνοτον.

2 (12r–17v) De signis. Title: παρασημειώσεις προγνωστικαὶ περὶ τῆς μελλούσης τοῦ ἀέρος καταστάσες. Incipit: ἥλιος ἀνατέλλων. Explicit: οὐδέποτε γάρ τι τούτων ἀεὶ φανερὸν ἱστόρηται κατεστιριγμένον. See Martin (1998, CXII–CXIII). Edited in Heeger (1889, 66–71).

18r–19r: blank.

3 (19r‒236v) Pollux, Onomasticon. Title: Πολυδεύκους ὀνομαστικὸν βιβλίον πρῶτον. Incipit: ὦ παῖ πατρὸς ἀγαθοῦ (1.1). Explicit: κόρημα, κιβωτόν, λύχνον (10.192). Contains books 1 (ff. 19r‒60v), 2 (ff. 60v‒90r), 3 (ff. 91r‒104v), 4 (ff. 104v‒122v), 5 (ff. 122v‒133v), 6 (ff. 133v‒151v), 7 (ff. 151v‒164r), 8 (ff. 164v‒183v), 9 (ff. 183v‒201v), and 10 (ff. 201v‒236v).

C. History

Fl was part of the library of Francesco Filelfo (1398–1481, on him see Eleuteri, Canart 1991, 181–2), whose ownership note can be found on f. 19v: ἡ βίβλος αὕτη Φραγκίσκου τοῦ Φιλέλφου ἐστὶ καὶ τῶν αὐτοῦ φίλων ‘This book [belongs] to Francesco Filelfo and his friends’; Zenobio AcciauoliZenobio Acciaiuoli (ca. 1461–1519; on his life see DBI 1.93–4.) wrote two notes (ff. 61r, 216v), and on f. 229r, ll. 1–6 he also restored a lacuna in Pollux’s text (10.152 μαρίπιον–10.154 ἐν Βάκχαις αὐτοῖς). This manuscript belonged to the private library of the Medici, then to the monastery of San Marco and finally to the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana in 1571.
