Annotations: on f. 221v there is an ownership note (later and clearly not by Pachomius, who according to the note is already dead): τὸ παρὸν βιβλίον ἔναι τοῦ Ἁγίου Γεωργίου τοῦ εἰς τὰ Κρημνὰ τῶν Bουνῶν Ζακύνθου· καὶ ἤτουν τοῦ Παχωμίου τοῦ Ῥουσάνου κόπος καὶ ἐξ τῆς χειρὸς αὐτοῦ ὧλον (lege ὅλον). καὶ αἰωνία αὐτοῦ ἡ μνήμη, ‘the present book belongs to [the monastery] of St. George in Kremna in the Mountains of Zakynthos. It is the work of Pachomius Rhusanus and has been entirely written by him. Eternal be his memory’. At the bottom of f. 336v Pachomius himself wrote: ταύτην τὴν μετάφρασιν ἔγραψα ὢν ἐν τῇ μονῇ τοῦ Βατοπεδίου· ἐπειδὴ ἦν ἐν πολλοῖς σφαλερά, ἀπῆλθον ἐν τῇ λαύρᾳ ἰδεῖν ἕτερον ἀντίγραφον καὶ οὐκ ἠθέλησαν δεῖξαί μοι. διὸ καὶ τὰς ᾠδὰς κατέλιπον οὔσας ἰαμβικὰς Ἰωάννου Γεωμέτρου διὰ τὸ μυριόσφαλτον, ‘I wrote this metaphrase while I was at the monastery of Vatopedi. Since in many [passages] it was full of errors, I went to the Lavra [monastery] to see another copy, but they did not show it to me. So I omitted the odes in iambic metres by John Geometres because of the innumerable errors’. This testifies to Pachomius’ awareness as a copyist, who was able to judge the reliability of a manuscript.

C. History

The manuscript was entirely written by Pachomius RhusanusPachomius Rhusanus (Zakynthos 1508–Naupactus 1553), with the exception of ff. 351r–352v. Pachomius was born in Zakynthos, studied in Venice, and became a monk at the monastery of St. George in KremnaSt. George in Kremna (Zakynthos). During his life he travelled throughout the eastern Mediterranean and also lived in the Athos monastery, where at least part of this manuscript was written, as the subscription confirms (see Annotations). Pachomius was no doubt a learned scholar and wrote several dogmatic and scholarly works (see Maloney 1976, 106–10 and Gones 2005).

This manuscript probably remained at the monastery of St. George on Zakynthos after Pachomius’ death until it was sold to Giacomo NaniGiacomo Nani (see DBI 24, 256–8) in the second half of the 18th century. It then became part of his collection, before finally entering the Marciana Library in 1797 (see Kolyva 1998, 47; N. Zorzi 2018, 104).
