C. History

The manuscript was copied by the monk CharitoCharitoCharito (PLP 30644; RGK I 378 = II 522, since Pérez Martín 2008, 451–8 proved that the two scribes were the same person), who worked in the monastery of HodegonHodegon Monastery (Constantinople) in Constantinople between 1319 and 1346. Lauxtermann (2003, 290 n. 13) suggests that the dating can be narrowed down to the years 1320–1337. This volume was probably used by the monk as a sort of personal encyclopaedia (Pérez Martín 2011, 381), reflecting his interests and readings. He likely had access to good libraries, including that of the Patriarchate of Constantinople (Pérez Martín 2008, 456), where Charito probably had access to the codex Par. Coisl. 345Par. Coisl. 345, from which he copied Moeris and other lexica. On f. Jv, there is the ownership note of Antonius EparchusAntonius Eparchus (1491–1571), who donated this manuscript, along with others, to King Francis I of France in 1538.
