(Phryn. Ecl. 311, Antiatt. ε 126, Poll. 9.156)

A. Main sources

(1) Phryn.

ἐμπυρισμός (‘burning’): Thus [says] Hyperides (or. 2 fr. 3.45.29 Jensen = C.1) carelessly, for one must say ἐμπρησμός.

(2) Antiatt.

ἐμπυρισμός: Hyperides [says it] in [the speech] In Defence of Lycophron (or. 2 fr. 3.45.29 Jensen = C.1).

(3) Poll.

Regarding the action [of burning], Homer (Il. 21.337) said ‘(a gale) bringing a baleful fire’, and if you really must, you might say similarly καῦμα (‘burning heat’), but [it is] better [to say] ἐμπρησμός and πυρκαϊά (‘fire’). And yet, in the [speech] In Defence of Lycophron by Hyperides (or. 2 fr. 3.45.29 Jensen = C.1), I found written ‘either the betrayal of dockyards, the burning (ἐμπυρισμόν) of public buildings, or the seizure of the Acropolis’, and so it is written in many books.

C. Loci classici, other relevant texts

(1) Hyp.

The words quoted by Pollux were inserted by Blass (1894, 26) at the end of the fr. 3 of Hyperides’ speech, though he acknowledges that they could also be located in other parts of the speech; cf. also Jensen ad loc.

[…] either the abandonment of dockyards, the burning of public buildings, or the seizure of the Acropolis […] (Transl. Burtt 1954, 379, modified).
